The Free Linux CD Project

What is Free Linux CD?

Who what where?

Free Linux CD is an effort to distribute Linux CDs globally. We're not developing a distribution or anything of that sort, but we are assisting those who cannot for any reason, acquire Linux through traditional means (store, Internet, friends). While our name might imply that we will only distribute "Linux," we are freely open to distributing other operating systems as well. Please read on for information about who we are, and where we are going.

Dear Friends of Free Linux CD,

We are the developers of The Free Linux CD Project. For several years, we have worked on The Free Linux CD Project diligently. Two years after building our own CD distribution system from scratch we found out that the project was stretched to its limits with us as the distributor (this was Emre's volunteer job for quite some time). We decided then that it would be impossible to serve the world's needs with the volume of CDs coming in, and the volume of CDs going out. Instead, we wanted to rebuild the project so that the public could get involved in CD distribution too. We may be close to working on this again, after a two year break.

Since our last public posting, many things have changed. Linux is now more mainstream than ever. Companies are beginning to offer Linux on pre-built hardware. Routers, and mobile phones are now Linux based. Broadband adoption has also soared, putting the ability to download Linux distributions in reach of many, regardless of economic status.

Linux itself has also taken great strides. Many distributions now have effective, no hassle installations. Drivers are now being provided for more hardware. Free, and open source applications have soared into the limelight. People are requesting ports of games, and applications that formerly ran on Windows.

While it may seem that Free Linux CD is no longer relevant, it is far from that. We believe that there is still room for us to make an impact-to spread the knowledge of Linux, and free software in general. There will always be somebody out there who can use a CD. While there are greater needs in this world, perhaps we can give the one thing we've discovered through Linux: knowledge, and the joy in being able to control your operating system, and not have it control you.

What's going on with FLCD?
update

You know the story below already. We are still at the same position. We do not have time and force and hope to finish this in the near future... We feel sorry about this but this is life :(

This doesn't mean that we are shutting down FLCD... But definitely we are not meeting our deadlines.

We receive almost daily some enthusiastic, positive emails from all of our supporters and we are very thankful to all of you who offered, CD, money, skills and time. It looks like we need to come up with a new game plan for this.

Hopefully in the near future we will come up with a better, more scalable, more interactive webpage where you can all be a part of the CD exchange.

All the best!
